Liberty life Assurance, Mom’s Gather extend Support to Children with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus

Liberty life Assurance Ltd, in collaboration with Mom’s Gather, has extended vital support to children living with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus in Uganda.

The donation included diapers, food, clothes, disinfectants, and other hygiene-related items, all aimed at enhancing the quality of life for affected children and easing the burden on their caregivers.

Joseph Almeida, Managing Director of Liberty Life assurance , led the team that delivered the supplies and lauded SHA-U for its dedicated efforts in supporting children with these conditions.

He stressed the need for greater awareness and corporate involvement, stating, “If many companies get to know what they’re doing, they will also offer help.”

Almeida further pledged ongoing support for SHA-U to ensure sustainability of the organization’s impact.

Juliet Murungi Okwi, Liberty life assurance marketing and Customer Experience Manager, reinforced the company’s commitment to community well-being.

“We’ve partnered with Mum’s Gather, which has a CSR activity with Spina Bifida in Uganda, and we wanted to support that wonderful cause,” she said. Murungi also emphasized the importance of public awareness about Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, commending SHA-U for its relentless efforts in supporting affected families.

She further encouraged Ugandans to adopt a more positive view of insurance. “Forget the narrative that insurance is for thieves or gambling. Insurance empowers you to live a free, happy life without financial stress,” she remarked.

SHA-U Executive Director Ruth Nalugya expressed deep gratitude for the donation, underscoring the urgent needs of the affected children and their families. She revealed that Spina Bifida affects between 6,000 and 8,000 children in Uganda annually, yet SHA-U is only able to support about 1,500 families per year.

“We need UGX 500 million to build a home for these children and their parents. Currently, we can only accommodate 240 families a year, yet the demand is much higher,” Nalugya said, appealing for more assistance from well-wishers and organizations.

Lisa Kusiima, founder of Mom’s Gather, explained their motivation for getting involved. “We saw the need to support mothers of these children. For the last year, we’ve been collecting items and money to help them.”

Lisa and her colleague Daisy Sunshine also announced an upcoming fundraising event scheduled for May 3 at Serena Hotel to continue generating support for these families.

Daisy further elaborated on their ongoing partnership with SHA-U and their vision for the future to help other mothers in the community who are mothering differently.

Daisy sated “We were looking for different organizations that are supporting mums and reached out to the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Uganda. They were in need of a lot of help. We didn’t even know much about the condition. We came here and were empowered about what the condition is, how to avoid it. So we’re able to tell our communities how to avoid it. But we also saw the need for how we can support these mums in the community,”
