Tracy Akello, a prominent taxation specialist from Uganda, has recently gained international recognition after receiving a prestigious award from ADIT (Advanced Diploma in International Tax). This accolade highlights Uganda’s potential on the global stage in taxation and economic development.

Her path has been characterized by academic distinction and professional dedication.

With both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Law from Makerere University, she has established a strong foundation in her legal aspects of taxation.

For the past ten years, she has earned a reputation as a leading advocate in the High Court and subordinate courts in Uganda, positioning herself as one of the foremost legal authorities in finance and taxation within the nation.

However, her ambitions extend beyond Uganda’s borders.

Akello has completed ADIT, Graduated as number two globally on 26th September 2024, and became an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Corporate Governance (formerly ICSA UK).

She is currently working towards completing the Advanced Diploma in International Tax at the Chartered Institute of Taxation in the UK.

This recognition is particularly meaningful for Uganda, as it underscores the country’s commitment to enhancing excellence in tax policy and administration.

Given that tax policies are crucial for sustainable development, Akello’s accomplishments inspire optimism for Uganda’s economic stability and growth.

Her international training and experience provides Uganda with advanced insights into aligning tax regulations with global best practices, ensuring its competitiveness in an increasingly interconnected global economy.

Contribution to transforming Uganda’s financial sector

Akello has made significant strides in transforming Uganda’s financial sector.

While serving in Uganda RevenueAuthority, she was instrumental in launching the nation’s inaugural online procurement monitoring system (PPMS).

This initiative, backed by the World Bank, marked a pivotal advancement in promoting transparency and efficiency in public procurement processes, highlighting her skill in merging legal principles with technological innovations for the public good.

As countries worldwide compete for top talent to tackle the intricacies of taxation and revenue management, Akello’s achievements emphasize the necessity of cultivating local expertise.

Professionals like her are vital for establishing a just and effective tax system, which is crucial for financing public services, mitigating inequality, and fostering sustainable economic growth.

Her journey serves as a beacon of inspiration for young Ugandans aspiring to enter fields such as law, finance, and taxation.

By honoring Akello’s accomplishments, Uganda encourages future professionals to chase their ambitions with commitment and a global outlook.

Looking ahead, her knowledge will be essential in shaping Uganda’s tax policies and its engagement with international tax systems.

Her comprehensive experience in both domestic and international taxation positions her uniquely to navigate the challenges of enhancing local resource mobilization, attracting foreign investments, and decreasing dependence on external funding.
