The much-anticipated 2025 edition of the Captain’s Bell Tournament is set to tee off from 15th to 17th May at the Uganda Golf Club in Kitante, buoyed by a generous UGX 179 million sponsorship package from Absa Bank Uganda.

Now in its seventh consecutive year of sponsorship, Absa Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the sport of golf in Uganda, with this year’s contribution marking a new milestone in their longstanding partnership with the Uganda Golf Club.

While addressing the press at the Kitante golf course, Micheal Segwaya, Chief Finance Officer of Absa Bank Uganda, expressed pride in their continued support of the tournament, which is a cherished annual tradition at the Club.

“This year marks the seventh year consecutive that Absa is sponsoring the Captain Bell Tournament and we are honoured that this year we shall be contributing Ugx 179 million. This includes a prize kit of Ugx 20 million such that we encourage more professionals in this space,” he said.

He further emphasized that the partnership goes beyond monetary value.

“This goes beyond a sponsorship, we are celebrating what golf brings to us integrity, discipline, resilience and strategic thinking and those are the values we cherish as a Bank,” he added.

The Captain’s Bell Tournament serves as the official platform for the Club’s Captain to introduce the new management team to members, while also creating a space for competition, camaraderie, and celebration.

This year’s edition promises to be thrilling, with a UGX 20 million professional cash prize sponsored by Absa up for grabs.

Segwaya highlighted Absa’s broader mission in supporting sports and community development.

“Golf has a special way of bringing people together, building friendships, and challenging us to be our best selves on and off the course. At Absa, we believe in the power of sport to inspire and connect communities.”

He also reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to ensuring that Ugandan golfers gain more exposure on the international scene.

The Captain of Uganda Golf Club, Paul Charles Rukundo, expressed gratitude to Absa Bank Uganda for its unwavering support and dedication to advancing the game.

“For over 70 years, the Captain’s Bell Tournament has united exceptional players, colleagues, and friends. Our community has flourished through the unwavering support of partners like Absa Bank Uganda, whose dedication to advancing golf in Uganda is truly appreciated.”

Receiving the sponsorship, Rukundo emphasized the critical role such partnerships play in the growth of the sport.

“We are grateful for the continued support from our longtime partner, Absa Bank Uganda. Their contribution is essential to ensuring the successful hosting of this tournament and for nurturing golf talent in Uganda.”

Beyond the Captain’s Bell Tournament, Absa has played a significant role in developing golf in Uganda, notably offering top golfers opportunities to compete in international competitions like the prestigious Magical Kenya Open, part of the European Golf Tour, for the past four years.
