KAMPALA, Uganda – Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga, former Member of Parliament for Nakawa East, has emerged as the newly elected Lord Mayor of Kampala Capital City Authority. In a competitive race with eight candidates, Balimwezo secured an impressive 141,220 votes, defeating his rivals.
The race saw Balimwezo, a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP), triumph over incumbent Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago, as well as contenders such as Kizito Moses Nsubuga (NRM), Naggayi Nabillah Sempala (Independent), Beatrice Mao (Independent), Ibrahim Kasozi Biribawa (FDC), Eddie Bazira Kibalama (Independent), and Jothan Yamureebire (Independent).
The announcement was made late this night by Jennifer Kyobutungi, the Returning Officer for Kampala, at the tallying center at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) in Nakawa Division.
Who is Engineer Ronald Balimwezo?
Engineer Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga is a seasoned Ugandan civil engineer, academic, and politician with over 20 years of leadership experience. A former Mayor of Nakawa Division and Member of Parliament for Nakawa East, he is now set to serve as Kampala’s Lord Mayor for the 2026–2031 term, following his success in the hotly contested race.
Balimwezo ran under the National Unity Platform (NUP), focusing on key issues such as infrastructure development, sanitation improvements, and better urban management for the city.
Engineer Balimwezo holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Makerere University and has further training in architecture, construction, and waste management. He served as a lecturer at Kyambogo University for over a decade, where he contributed to the education of future engineers. Politically, he was elected as Mayor of Nakawa Division in 2011 and 2016, and represented Nakawa East in the Ugandan Parliament from 2021.
In terms of community advocacy, he was appointed as a Ugandan Ambassador for the Environment by the Minister of Water and Environment. He is also honored as an honorary Ambassador of the Korean Community in Uganda.
His Vision for Kampala
Engineer Balimwezo is committed to tackling the city’s challenges head-on. His vision for Kampala includes enhancing public hygiene, with a focus on improving cleanliness in public spaces such as city markets and urban areas. He is also focused on expanding waste management initiatives to reduce pollution and improve living conditions across the city. Additionally, Balimwezo plans to prioritize access to health, education, and public utilities for all Kampala residents, aiming to restore vital social services.
As Balimwezo prepares for his new role, his supporters are hopeful that his technical expertise and political experience will bring about positive change for Uganda’s capital city.
