A fire broke out at Uganda Martyrs High School – Bweya in Kajjansi on July 22, 2025 evening, gutting a two-room boys’ dormitory used by Senior One and Senior Two students.
Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported, as the students were in their classrooms for evening prep when the incident occurred.
According to Patrick Onyango, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are currently underway.
“The dormitory, which housed over 100 students, was completely destroyed. Everything inside was burnt beyond salvage,” he stated.
The affected structure was isolated from other buildings on campus, which prevented the fire from spreading.
He noted that efforts by the school community to put out the blaze were unsuccessful, prompting a response from the Entebbe fire brigade, who managed to extinguish the flames.
Police have since cordoned off the scene to allow forensic teams to conduct a reconstruction and determine the cause of the fire.
This incident reignites calls for enhanced fire safety measures in schools across the country, particularly in boarding facilities, to prevent similar disasters, which have led to fatalities in the past years.
