The Uganda Police Force has made a breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to combat a string of robberies that have plagued the Mukono region in recent weeks. In a targeted intelligence-led operation, five suspects were arrested and several stolen items recovered.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, the arrests followed a coordinated operation supported by CCTV camera footage obtained from Mukono Central Police Station. The footage played a pivotal role in identifying and tracking down the suspects.
The suspects, arrested while traveling in a Toyota Hiace minibus with registration number UBJ 343H, include: Batambuze David, 32, a taxi driver operating from Bunamwaya stage; Ronald Mulira, 30, resident of Nateete; Abdul Serukenya, 40, of Nyejje-Goma, Mukono District; Shafiq Ssemanda, 28, of Kibiri-Busabala; and Tasha Ainambabazi, 20, a bar attendant from Namasuba.
During the arrest, police recovered seven mobile phones believed to have been stolen during recent robberies. The recovered items have been exhibited as evidence to aid in the ongoing investigations.
However, four other suspects managed to escape during the operation. They have been identified as Tifu (the getaway driver), Caros, Ashiraf, and Ibra.
Police have launched a manhunt for the fugitives and are continuing investigations to identify other individuals connected to the criminal racket.
“This operation is part of a broader and sustained effort to rid the region of criminal elements and ensure the safety of our communities,” said SSP Onyango.
He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station as the search for the remaining suspects intensifies.
