KAMPALA,Uganda– Usher Wilson Owere, former Chairman General of the National Organization of Trade Unions (NOTU), has officially announced his intention to run for the Workers’ Member of Parliament seat in Uganda’s 12th Parliament come 2026.
In an exclusive interview held in Kampala on Saturday, Owere stated that his decision stems from a deep commitment to addressing long-standing legislative gaps affecting the country’s labor force—particularly the lack of a national wage bill.
“I’m stepping forward to contest as a Workers MP in the 12th Parliament,” he said. “After 15 years of serving as NOTU Chairman General, I have gained extensive experience and insight into workers’ issues. I am ready to advocate for improved labor standards and push for the long-overdue national wage bill.”

Owere highlighted his past efforts in strengthening grassroots structures within the labor movement, helping ensure that workers’ concerns are heard and acted upon at the national level.
He also pointed to notable achievements during his tenure, including securing permanent headquarters for NOTU and successfully lobbying against the liberalization of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), persuading the President to maintain its current structure.
Owere says he is now seeking a broader platform in Parliament to continue championing workers’ rights and push for policies that benefit Uganda’s labor force.
