NGOMA, NAKASEKE District— Bukono County Member of Parliament, Persis Namuganza, has said she is still in the race for Speaker of Parliament and wants to bring positive change.
She made the remarks during an interview with journalists at the end of the NRM leaders’ retreat in Kyankwanzi. The retreat was closed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at his state lodge in Ngoma, Nakaseke District.
Namuganza said that during the retreat, she talked with many Members of Parliament who want new leadership. She believes this gives her a good chance to become Speaker.
Hon. Persis Namuganza further noted that she has observed ongoing conflicts among some leaders, comparing the situation to visitors fighting over bedrooms in a home while the rightful occupants look on.
“I have seen people here fighting for bedrooms, yet we, the children of the home know every corner of the house and can only watch in silence. It is surprising to see visitors quarrel over where to sleep, while the owners of the home look on as they tear each other apart. It makes us wonder, if these were the real children of the home, would they even allow such behavior? But as for us, we know how to handle such visitors,” she said.
Namuganza said the retreat helped leaders learn many important things, including security, development, and how to serve people better. She thanked President Museveni for guiding them and bringing leaders together.
“We have learned a lot, and now we must go back and use this knowledge to help our people,” she said.
She added that the retreat helped her make new friends and gain more support for her Speakership bid. Many colleagues, she said, have encouraged her to stay in the race.
This has given her more confidence to continue her campaign.
Namuganza promised that if she becomes Speaker of the 12th Parliament, she will focus on unity, strong leadership, and better service delivery.
“I want to serve the people of Uganda and work with my colleagues to build a Parliament that reflects the aspirations of our nation,” she said.
