KAMPALA, Uganda (UGNEWSLINE) –Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) officials have expressed concern over rising cases of bedbug infestations and other insect-related problems in households, describing them as a public health burden on communities.
The concern was made on October 10, 2026, by KCCA Principal Public Health Officer Dr Sarah Zalwango during a routine community cleaning exercise under the Weyonje campaign held in Makerere I Parish, Kawempe Division.
The event was organized by KCCA’s Public Health Directorate and attended by the authority’s Executive Director, Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki, alongside key political and technical officers.
Makerere I Parish councillor Jjingo Enock led a delegation of KCCA officials on a guided tour of households in Mukwenda, Mukubira and Mini Triangle zones to assess the extent of bedbug infestations and other insect-related challenges affecting residents.
The delegation included Dr Zalwango, Dr Judith Nalukwago, the public health official attached to the Lord Mayor’s office, and Kawempe South Lord Councillor Ali Musa Ssegane, among others.
Speaking after the tour of Mukwenda Zone, Dr Zalwango said she was shocked to learn that many households were silently struggling with bedbug infestations and other insect-related problems that threaten residents’ health and well-being.
She said KCCA was concerned about the frequency of bedbug infestations in communities and disclosed that the authority had assembled a technical vector control team led by its vector control officer, Patrick Kyagamba, to conduct systematic household spraying across all city divisions.
On her part, Dr Nalukwago commended Makerere I Parish councillor Jjingo Enock and Kawempe South Lord Councillor Ali Musa Ssegane for lobbying KCCA to extend the Weyonje campaign to the parish.
Ssegane said local leaders would continue lobbying KCCA officials to intensify efforts to eradicate bedbug infestations and improve the provision of essential social services to residents.
Jjingo, who also chairs the division’s Committee on Human Resource, Administration and Works, pledged to strengthen community sensitisation campaigns on hygiene and sanitation. He said the efforts would focus on building residents’ capacity to improve hygiene and sanitation standards across the different zones.
