ENTEBBE : President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged to initiate a global discourse on justice and shared prosperity as a strategy to address persistent conflicts and inequality across the world.
The President made the remarks while hosting a State Iftar Dinner at State House Entebbe under the theme “Peace, Unity and Reconciliation: Our Divine Mandate for Nation Building.”
Museveni said many of the conflicts witnessed globally are driven by chauvinistic tendencies among political actors who promote divisive and short-sighted politics based on identity rather than ideology and shared interests.
As the current Chairperson of the Non-Aligned Movement, Museveni emphasized that the world should strive for justice, peace, and global affluence through politics based on common interests. According to him, such an approach can help end conflicts and promote socio-economic transformation for all societies.
He pointed to Uganda’s experience under the leadership of the National Resistance Movement, noting that the country has managed to overcome sectarian politics and maintain stability since the government came into power.
Call for Peaceful Settlement in the Middle East
The President also called for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing tensions in the Middle East involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
Museveni reiterated his support for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, emphasizing that dialogue and diplomacy should prevail over the use of force. He revealed that he has previously engaged leaders from the countries involved in discussions aimed at finding a lasting solution to the crisis.
Call for Unity and Wealth Creation
During the gathering, Museveni encouraged Uganda’s Muslim community to promote unity and actively engage in wealth creation to support socio-economic transformation and national development. He also commended members of the Muslim fraternity for their support of the government in recent elections.
Leaders Emphasize Peace and Development
Uganda’s Vice President Jessica Alupo urged the Muslim community to embrace the values of peace, unity, and reconciliation during and after the holy month of Ramadan.
Alupo noted that the peace and stability championed by President Museveni have enabled Uganda to achieve significant development progress. She called on religious communities to continue promoting harmony as a foundation for national growth.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among confirmed that Parliament has received the Khadi Courts Bill for consideration. She commended the Muslim community for supporting the government and thanked Museveni for what she described as his role in maintaining peace and unity in the country.
Call to Expedite Khadi Courts Bill
The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, urged the government to expedite the enactment of the Khadi Courts Bill. Mubajje said the legislation would help facilitate arbitration of family and Islamic matters within the Muslim community.
The annual State Iftar Dinner brings together religious leaders, government officials, and members of the Muslim community to reflect on faith, unity, and national development.
