KAMPALA (UGNEWSLINE) – Police have arrested 11 taxi drivers for allegedly stopping and loading passengers at the Kisaasi and Nalya flyover intersections along Kampala’s Northern Bypass, an offence authorities say disrupts the safe movement of traffic.
The drivers were intercepted by traffic police during an operation targeting motorists who stop at prohibited points to pick up passengers.
Police said the practice creates obstruction at the busy intersections and poses a risk to other road users.
The 11 drivers were arrested and their vehicles impounded before they were charged with inconsiderate use of a motor vehicle, contrary to Section 107 of the Traffic and Road Safety Act, Cap 347.
They are expected to appear in court.
Traffic Police spokesman, Michael Kananura warned taxi operators against turning busy road intersections and other prohibited areas into passenger-loading points.
“Taxi drivers should not stage or load passengers at these intersections along the Northern Bypass or in other prohibited areas,” Kananura said, adding that the police operation would continue until order and safe traffic movement are restored.
The crackdown comes amid continued efforts by traffic authorities to curb practices that obstruct traffic and endanger motorists and other road users on major roads in and around Kampala.
