Police in Kampala have launched investigations into the unexplained death of an 11-year-old girl whose body was discovered inside a passenger taxi at Old Taxi Park on Monday morning.
According to police, the incident came to light at around 9:00am on December 23, 2025, as a Toyota Hiace taxi (commonly known as a drone) was preparing to depart for Tororo.
A passenger reportedly noticed that a young girl who had spent the night in the vehicle was unresponsive and alerted authorities.
Preliminary findings indicate that the child had been put on the vehicle the previous day at Tororo Stage by a guide identified only as Asuman.
Rachael Kawala, the Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson, said the girl was reportedly traveling alone to Walusubi in Mukono District. The driver, identified as Kalulu Bosco, was given two phone contacts of the person expected to receive her upon arrival.
However, when the vehicle reached Walusubi at around 12:30am, attempts to reach the contacts were unsuccessful, one phone was switched off, while the other number was said to be incorrect.
With no one to receive the child, the driver decided to return with her to Kampala, intending to take her back to Tororo if the contacts could not be reached. The girl remained in the vehicle overnight.
Kawala said a search of the child’s belongings revealed a piece of paper with two phone numbers and a yellow T-shirt bearing the badge of St. Anthony Parents Mukono, with the name “Kiiza” written on it. Police confirmed that the child was not accompanied by any known relative.
A case of sudden death has been registered, and the body has been taken to KCCA City Mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations continue. Police are working to establish the child’s identity and trace her family.
Police urged parents and guardians to ensure that children travel under the supervision of responsible adults to prevent similar tragedies.
