A late-night collision along the Kabale–Katuna road has claimed the life of a boda boda rider, with police arresting the driver of a Toyota Premio suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The crash occurred at about 11pm on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at Mwanjari, as the two vehicles were reportedly travelling in the same direction from Kabale towards Katuna. The motorcycle, a red Bajaj Boxer registration number UEV 857H, collided with Toyota Premio registration number UAT 791S.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Premio saloon car was driving under the influence of alcohol, and he is in police custody to help us with investigations,” said Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime.
The boda boda rider died instantly in the crash, leaving the victim’s family facing a painful loss from a journey that ended on the dark stretch of the highway.
Police in Kigezi have renewed their warning against drink-driving, saying motorists and boda boda riders found violating traffic laws will face arrest and prosecution. Officers are also expected to intensify traffic operations, including breathalyser tests and the impounding of vehicles driven by suspected drunk motorists.
Police have extended condolences to the family of the deceased as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash continue.
