A fire outbreak in a residential home in Semwogerere Zone, Bukoto 1 Parish, Nakawa Division, has claimed the life of a one-year-old girl.
According to Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Rachael Kawala, said the incident occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the home of Semwogerere Simon.
The deceased, Evelyn Najuma allegedly suffocated inside the burning house.
The Chairperson of LC 2 for Semwogerere Zone notified authorities, prompting an immediate response from police and the fire brigade, who successfully extinguished the flames.
Preliminary investigations indicate that two children had been left alone in the house while their mother went to fetch water from a nearby tap.
There was no electricity at the time of the fire. Reports suggest that the four-year-old brother ran to alert their mother, leaving Najuma inside. By the time the mother returned, part of the roof had collapsed on the child.
The body of the deceased has been taken to Mulago Mortuary for a postmortem examination. Police investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.
