Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has stepped up efforts to consolidate support for its official candidates ahead of local elections, urging party members to back endorsed flag bearers from the village level through to national leadership.
Party officials say the campaign is aimed at strengthening internal cohesion and ensuring that elected leaders align with the NRM’s policy agenda.
In Kapchorwa District, NRM Chairperson Mutwalibu Mawet said local leaders have begun meeting candidates contesting for village chairperson and Women’s Council positions to convey messages from NRM National Chairman President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Secretary General Richard Todwong.
“We have called together all our candidates for village chairperson and Women’s Councils to share the message of the National Chairman and the Secretary General,” Mawet said. “They have received it well and are fully committed to the party’s programme.”
Mawet said the party is seeking candidates whose policy priorities are consistent with the NRM Manifesto for 2026–2031, arguing that ideological alignment is essential for implementing the party’s development agenda at the grassroots level.
“We are looking for chairpersons whose manifestos align with the NRM manifesto,” he said. “Those are the leaders we shall support because they will help implement the party’s vision at the grassroots.”
