RUBANDA : A 15-year-old boy identified as Mukiza, a resident of Kashasha Trading Centre in Rubanda District, has drowned in Lake Bunyonyi.
The tragic incident occurred on August 19, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m. at Itara Village on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi.
Marine Police in Kigezi has expressed concern over the increasing cases of drowning on the lake and called on residents to observe water safety measures.
Nelson Tumushime, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, said the incident highlights the need for greater vigilance among communities living around the lake.
“Marine Police in Kigezi is gravely concerned about the increasing cases of drowning at Lake Bunyonyi,” Tumushime said.
He cautioned parents and guardians against allowing children to swim without adult supervision.
“Children should not swim without the supervision of adults. People using small canoes and boats should always wear life jackets, and lake users should avoid sailing at night,” Tumushime cautioned.
He added that Police would continue conducting sensitisation drives in communities around Lake Bunyonyi in collaboration with local council leaders and school administrators to promote water safety.
Tumushime urged residents and other lake users to follow safety guidelines to prevent further loss of lives.
