KATAKWI: The Vice president and Woman MP for Katakwi district Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo Rose Epel has this morning participated in the renewal of her National Identification Card (ID) during the ongoing nationwide exercise.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the 10-minute-exercise, at her residence in Katakwi Town council, Ngariam County, Katakwi district, Alupo called upon Ugandans to use the opportunity to renew their IDs because citizenship is a Constitutional Right.

Alupo further explained that the exercise is essential for maintaining accurate, secure, and inclusive identity data to support national planning, elections and public service delivery.

“Unlike the old cards, the new national IDs are expected to have enhanced security features, including biometric iris scanning, making them harder to forge and reducing identity fraud,” she explained.

The renewal targets identification cards that expired in 2024, 2025, and 2026. Alupo further said that to renew the cards, applicants are required to present their expired national ID or valid police report in case of a lost ID.

According to NIRA, the renewal exercise will run for six months having commenced on May 27th in all parishes across the country.

Citizens are urged to identify their correct citizenship category under Uganda’s Constitution to avoid processing delays Alupo said. She thanked the team from NIRA for the services they are rendering to Ugandans.

The parish-level deployment includes 10 rotating registration kits per district, with schedules determined by local authorities.

The government has allocated over shillings 666billion for the renewal exercise, which will cater to approximately 15.8 million renewals and 17.2 million unregistered individuals including adults and youth turning 16 years.

Irene Tumwa, the Katakwi district registration officer, warned that providing false information is a criminal offense and urged citizens to accurately declare their citizenship category under the constitution.

She added that the parish-level strategy and digital registration are not only about issuing IDs, but also part of a broader initiative to verify and empower every Ugandan citizen.

Tumwa noted the that turn has been good adding that over 3000 people have so far renewed their national identification…

Benjamin Omalwa, Registration Assistant, who renewed the VP’s ID congratulated Alupo for having participated in the exercise and urged Katakwi residents to turn up in big numbers for the exercise
