Entebbe, Uganda – Entebbe International Airport (EIA) experienced a significant boost in both passenger and cargo traffic in June 2025, according to newly released statistics by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA). A total of 213,217 international passengers were recorded during the month—106,583 arrivals and 106,634 departures—translating to an average of 7,107 travelers per day.
This figure marks the second-highest daily passenger average ever recorded at the airport, trailing only behind the 7,171 daily average recorded in December 2024. It also represents a noticeable rise from May 2025, which saw 198,052 international passengers (97,568 arrivals and 100,484 departures).
Key Drivers Behind the Growth
Several factors have contributed to this upward trend:
Hajj Season Travel: June saw the return of hundreds of Muslim pilgrims from Mecca, significantly boosting inbound traffic.
Expanded Uganda Airlines Routes: The national carrier’s growing network—including new connections to Mumbai, Lagos, Abuja, and London Gatwick—has improved accessibility and connectivity for both leisure and business travelers.
Tourism Promotion: Aggressive campaigns to market Uganda’s natural beauty and cultural heritage continue to attract international tourists.
Major Conferences and Events: The airport served as a critical transit point for attendees of regional and international events, including preparatory activities for CHAN, AFCON, and the African Judges Forum.
Business and Trade Travel: Improved services and stable flight schedules have enhanced EIA’s role as a hub for regional business and trade.
Cargo Movement on the Rise
Cargo operations at Entebbe also experienced robust activity, with a total of 6,293 metric tonnes handled in June. This includes 4,332 metric tonnes of exports and 1,961 metric tonnes of imports.
Exports were largely driven by increased demand for agricultural products, including fruits, fish, fish maws, and gold, bolstered by more efficient cargo handling and customs processes.
Imports benefited from expanded direct cargo capacity, especially on Uganda Airlines and partner carriers, enabling faster and more cost-effective movement of goods.
Outlook
The consistent growth in both passenger and cargo numbers underscores Entebbe International Airport’s rising strategic importance in the region. Authorities attribute the gains to a mix of strategic airline partnerships, government-led tourism and trade initiatives, and infrastructure improvements at the airport.
With continued efforts to enhance operational efficiency and expand service offerings, EIA is poised to maintain this upward momentum in the coming months.
