The Katonga Political faction, which separated from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) at Najjanankumbi, has initiated the drive of gathering signatures necessary for the official registration of their new party, the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).
Last week, the Electoral Commission (EC) approved the group’s request to register their party, after several stumbling blocks.
The EC initially denied their registration because it closely resembled the already registered People Power Front (PPF) and their previous parent party, the FDC. There were concerns regarding the similar color blue, and name, but eventually, they were approved.
Their president Erias Lukwago officially launched the signature collection exercise at their offices along Katonga road, in Nakasero.
The drive is commencing in Kampala and Wakiso districts before expanding to other regions across the country.
Lukwago, who also serves as the Lord Mayor of Kampala City, cautioned against any interference from state agencies nationwide, emphasizing that this is a legally sanctioned activity required by the Electoral Commission for party registration.
He encouraged Ugandans who are looking for change to sign up with the PFF at specific centers located throughout the country.
Lukwago explained that the recent FDC Delegates Conference resolved to establish a new political party, and this initiative is aimed at implementing that decision.
The PFF has chosen white and royal blue as its official colors, with a phone symbol as its identifying mark.
He elaborated that PFF’s goal is to work alongside other organizations to promote national liberation, rather than vying for political influence.
“We want to connect with other forces of change to liberate the country,” he said.
He characterized the PFF as a coalition comprising diverse political entities, advocacy groups and civil society organizations all uniting in the pursuit of peace and development.
