The Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) has summoned the National Unity Platform (NUP) opposition party for questioning in relation to the opening of the party’s office in Iganga.
In letter dated August 28, 2025, the CID summoned specifically the party’s vice chairperson Women League Eastern Region and former women MP of Iganga Hajjat Aziza Kakerewe to assist in their investigations on the alleged causing of public nuisance.
She is expected to report to CID Iganga Police Station on September 3, 2025, at 10:00am, to provide valuable and relevant information relating to the matter under investigations and to deliver relevant documents namely the authorising letter which permitted NUP procession on August 25, 2025.
NUP inaugurated its Eastern Region Headquarters in Iganga District, a move the party says underscores its commitment to building strong grassroots structures ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The event, which attracted a large gathering of supporters and well-wishers, was presided over by NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), alongside senior party leaders, Members of Parliament, and the Leader of Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi.
Speaking at the launch, Kyagulanyi hailed the new office as a home for the struggle in Eastern Uganda, a region they say has long been marginalized by the current regime.
Kyagulanyi said they waylaid police to Mbale yet the function was in Iganga, and even the local enforcement was caugh by suprise.
He disclosed that the land was purchased over a year ago, and construction had been ongoing discreetly ever since.
“I am thankful that up until this morning, nobody except those who needed to know was aware that it was us building in that place,” Kyagulanyi said.
He added that the secrecy was intentional, due to fears that the project could have been disrupted by state.
“No wonder the police showed up asking why we chose to surprise them with a visit. Well, because if they had known, they would have done everything possible to frustrate us,” he remarked.
“This regional headquarters will coordinate our revolutionary activities across Eastern Uganda and serve as a hub for various efforts. It’s a testament to our commitment to building a party that will live beyond us,” he said.
The office is expected to play a strategic role in NUP’s grassroots mobilization efforts as the 2026 general elections draw near.
