As the world observes the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child (IDGC), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) urges countries to enhance laws and regulations aimed at safeguarding children from all forms of sexual violence.
According to the report, one in eight girls experiences sexual abuse before reaching the age of 18.
The findings reveal that over 370 million women and girls currently alive, nearly one in eight, have faced rape or sexual assault prior to their 18th birthday, with Sub-Saharan Africa alone accounting for 79 million cases.
During a press conference marking the IDGC at the Uganda Media Centre, the State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, emphasized the necessity of reinforcing legal measures to prevent the judiciary from granting bail to individuals arrested for rape and defilement offenses.
He highlighted that while bail is a constitutional right, those accused of such serious crimes should be denied this right until the court has rendered a judgment.
He argued that implementing this approach would deter potential offenders.
The minister urged parents, communities, and Civil Society Organizations to collaborate with the government in safeguarding the rights and well-being of the girl child.
“As we commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child, we are calling on everyone to break down barriers that hold girls back from achieving their full potential. Let’s empower girls to dream big and create a brighter future,” he noted
He stressed that the day is a reminder that girls’ empowerment is very crucial for a more equitable world.
“By investing in girls, we’re not only changing their lives but also shaping a better future for all. Let’s work together to create a world where every girl can thrive,” he noted.
During the same press conference, Christopher Kugonza, representing the Country Director of Plan International Uganda, emphasized the need for immediate action to protect the lives of girls.
He highlighted alarming statistics, noting that 40% of girls under 18 and 10% of those under 15 are subjected to early marriage, while 55% of girls aged 12 to 16 do not complete primary education, and 22% do not finish secondary school, among other issues.
The IDGC serves as a significant global occasion to honor girls worldwide, amplifying their voices, actions, and leadership. It is a day dedicated to all who advocate for girls and their rights.
