KAMPALA, Uganda – Thousands of people, both young and old, turned up for the highly anticipated Mengo SS marathon, aimed at raising funds for their 18 billion UGX nine-story signature dining hall complex project. The project was officially launched last July 2025 during the school’s 130th anniversary celebrations.
The Minister for Kampala Metropolitan Affairs, Hajjati Minsa Kabanda, who was the chief guest, urged all friends, former and current students, as well as well-wishers, to support the school’s efforts in raising the necessary funds to complete the project.
Kabanda made a generous pledge of 6 million UGX towards the project and congratulated the school leadership for their initiative to expand, renovate, and modernize this oldest school in the country. He noted that this development would significantly improve the learning environment for the students.
The Chairperson of the Board of Governors, Robina Kyeyune, thanked all stakeholders for their relentless efforts in responding to the school’s call by coming out to support the development master plan, which focuses on creating a modern learning environment for over 6,000 students.
The Headmaster, Nantagya Grace Ssebanakitta, told this website on the sidelines of the marathon that while the facility is the signature project for the 130th anniversary, the underlying goal is to produce well-rounded learners capable of positively impacting the nation.
“We believe that in the future, today’s generation will accomplish great things for us. What we are doing is providing them with the foundation,” he said.
He expressed confidence that within the next 36 months, Mengo will have a state-of-the-art multipurpose dining facility to accommodate several key faculties that will transform Uganda’s approach to the education sector.
Nantagya, along with board members led by Robina Kyeyune, took Minister Kabanda on a tour of the magnificent sprawling facility. They revealed that the school has already invested Shs 1 billion to kick-start the work, which is currently at the foundation stage—a development that greatly impressed the minister.
Several categories of marathon participants won gifts courtesy of sponsors such as Zebra Associates, Cavendish University Uganda, Sumz, and Kampala City Festival 2025, among others.
