Lamwo District, Uganda — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has expressed deep sorrow following a tragic road accident that claimed at least 46 lives in Kitaleeba Village, Kiryandongo District. The fatal crash, which occurred at midnight along the Kampala–Gulu highway, involved a passenger bus and left several others seriously injured.
Speaking at an NRM presidential campaign rally held at Padibe Boys Primary School playground in Padibe Town Council, Lamwo District, President Museveni extended his condolences to the bereaved families and the nation at large.
“I have learnt with sadness about the tragic accident that occurred this morning along the Kampala–Gulu highway, claiming many lives,” the President stated earlier on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. “I extend my condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a quick recovery.”
As part of his support to the affected families, President Museveni directed the State House Comptroller to provide UGX 5 million to each family of the deceased to assist with burial arrangements, and UGX 1 million to each of the injured to support their medical treatment.
The President, who is also the National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential candidate, condemned reckless driving and called on motorists to prioritize road safety.
“This reckless behavior by some drivers continues to cost us the lives of innocent Ugandans,” he said. “I urge all road users to exercise the utmost caution to prevent such avoidable tragedies. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace.”
Police investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
