A devastating road accident claimed the lives of ten people and left three others injured early this morning on the Busia Highway at Busowa Town Council. The crash involved a Toyota Hiace minibus and a stationary trailer.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Toyota Hiace attempted to overtake another vehicle when an oncoming vehicle forced him to swerve to avoid a head-on collision.
Michael Kananura, the Community Liason Officer, Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, said in a statement that the minibus lost control and smashed into the stationary trailer, killing all ten occupants instantly, including the driver. The three survivors were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Authorities responded promptly to the scene, transporting the injured and recovering the bodies of the deceased to the local hospital mortuary. Investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
Police have issued a stark warning to motorists, urging them to refrain from reckless driving, speeding, and unsafe overtaking, behaviors that remain leading causes of road tragedies across the country.
Kananura emphasized the importance of caution on the roads, urging drivers to prioritize safety at all times.
