Busiro East Member of Parliament Medard Lubega Sseggona has welcomed the Electoral Commission’s decision to disqualify National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer Mathias Walukaga over issues related to his academic documentation.
Walukaga, widely perceived as the preferred candidate of NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), was denominated following EC’s verification exercise.
Addressing supporters in Buddo, Sseggona described the development as a vindication of his earlier concerns about the integrity of the selection process.
He noted that his own disqualification by the NUP Electoral Management Committee had signaled to him a broader internal challenge.
Sseggona used the moment to raise broader questions about leadership standards and candidate vetting within political parties. He suggested that Uganda’s political environment requires leaders who demonstrate both competence and preparedness for public office, and cautioned voters against making decisions based on political momentum alone.
He further urged citizens to reflect on the kind of leadership they want for the country, stressing the importance of experience, education, and stability as factors that safeguard national progress.
The incident has contributed to ongoing national discussions on the qualifications required for elective office, internal party governance, and the role of institutions such as the Electoral Commission in upholding electoral standards ahead of the coming elections.
