Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title after beating Arsenal 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in the final at Budapest’s Puskas Arena.
Arsenal looked set for a dream night when Kai Havertz gave the Premier League champions an early lead after just six minutes. The German forward broke through the PSG defence and fired a powerful shot into the roof of the net, putting Mikel Arteta’s side ahead.
However, PSG gradually took control of the match and dominated possession for long periods. Arsenal’s defence, led by Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba, worked tirelessly to keep the French champions at bay.
The turning point came in the 65th minute when Arsenal right-back Cristhian Mosquera brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia inside the penalty area. Ousmane Dembele calmly converted the resulting spot-kick to level the score.
PSG continued to press for a winner, with Kvaratskhelia striking the post and Vitinha going close as Arsenal spent much of the second half defending deep inside their own half.
Arsenal thought they should have been awarded a penalty late in the game when substitute Noni Madueke collided with Nuno Mendes in the box, but referee Daniel Siebert dismissed the appeals. The decision frustrated the Arsenal bench, with both manager Mikel Arteta and midfielder Declan Rice receiving bookings.
Neither side could find a winning goal in extra time, forcing the final into a penalty shootout.
The shootout remained tense until Gabriel stepped up for Arsenal. The Brazilian defender missed the decisive penalty, allowing PSG to secure a 4-3 victory and claim back-to-back Champions League titles.
In a touching moment after the match, PSG captain Marquinhos immediately went to comfort his fellow Brazilian teammate Gabriel while celebrations erupted among the French club’s players.
Despite the heartbreaking defeat, Arsenal can reflect on an impressive season. The Gunners recently ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League title and came within a penalty shootout of completing a historic domestic and European double.
While their quest for a first Champions League trophy continues, Arsenal’s campaign has firmly re-established them among Europe’s elite clubs.
