KAMPALA Uganda (UGNEWSLINE) – Spiro Uganda has announced plans to nearly triple its mega battery-swapping hubs by December 2026 as demand for electric motorcycles continues to grow across the country. The company says the expansion will improve access to charging services while supporting riders with maintenance and spare parts.
Speaking at the Renewable Energy Conference and Expo 2026 held at Kampala Serena Hotel, Spiro Uganda Deputy Country Director Bruce Mucunguzi said the company is introducing solar- and grid-powered mega battery-swapping hubs capable of charging at least 200 batteries simultaneously. He said the expansion is aimed at improving convenience for riders while promoting safe riding and reliable after-sales support.
Spiro Uganda currently operates four mega battery-swapping hubs in Mukono, Soroti, Jinja and Bukoto in Kampala and plans to increase the number to 11 by December. The hubs will complement the company’s network of more than 360 battery-swapping stations nationwide, allowing riders to quickly exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones.
Meanwhile, the government says continued policy support is driving growth in Uganda’s electric mobility sector. Allan Muhumuza, Team Leader of the Mobility Bureau at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, said the country’s electric vehicle production capacity reached 79,000 units annually in 2025, with about 25,000 electric vehicles—mainly motorcycles—manufactured locally. He added that electric vehicles are becoming more affordable and are expected to cost less than petrol and diesel-powered vehicles in the near future.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has also revealed that regulations for electric vehicle infrastructure are being developed to support the sector’s expansion. Senior ministry official Eng. Derick Birimumaso said the new framework will focus on vehicle and battery safety, accessible charging infrastructure, user security, and standards for energy metering, tariffs, billing and licensing.
