Police have arrested two additional suspects, including the man believed to be the prime suspect in the killing of professional rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, bringing the total number of people in custody to 10.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, the latest suspects have been identified as Mugwiisa Obed and Owino Joseph, a security guard. Their arrest follows ongoing investigations into the alleged mob attack that led to Gongodyo’s death on June 5, 2026.
Kawala said Mugwiisa was identified through video footage captured during the incident. He was allegedly seen wearing a yellow T-shirt and carrying a large log believed to have been used in the attack.
During interrogation, Mugwiisa reportedly led detectives to a local laundry where he had taken the yellow T-shirt he was wearing on the day of the incident. The garment was recovered and has been added to the evidence being examined by investigators.

Police believe Mugwiisa played a central role in the attack and are treating him as a key suspect in the case.
The second suspect, Owino Joseph, works as a security guard. Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific role he is alleged to have played in the incident.

The arrests come days after police rounded up eight other suspects in connection with the brutal killing that shocked Uganda’s sporting fraternity and triggered widespread condemnation.
Kawala said efforts are continuing to identify and apprehend other individuals believed to have participated in the mob action.
“We remain committed to ensuring that all those responsible for this criminal act are held accountable and brought to justice in accordance with the law,” she said.

Police have pledged to provide further updates as investigations progress.
Gongodyo’s death has sparked calls for justice and renewed concern over incidents of mob violence, with sports leaders and members of the public demanding that all perpetrators be brought before the courts.
