Campaign activity intensified in Kalangala District on Sunday (June 14, 2026) as senior National Resistance Movement officials stepped up efforts to consolidate support ahead of the upcoming Woman Member of Parliament by-election.
Haruna Kasolo, the NRM Vice Chairperson for the Buganda region, pledged to secure what he described as a landslide victory for the party’s flag bearer, Idah Nabayiga.

Speaking during mobilisation engagements at Kasekulo Landing Site, Kasolo said he would remain in the district until the party’s objective is achieved.
Accompanied by members of the Party Secretariat, Kasolo was received by Electoral Commission official Amb. James Williams Kinobe and other district leaders before holding a strategy meeting focused on strengthening grassroots mobilisation.
Addressing party leaders and supporters, Kasolo framed the contest as a test of effective representation, arguing that the NRM candidate was best positioned to articulate local concerns and work with government structures to address them. He contrasted the ruling party’s candidate with opposition contenders, suggesting that proximity and understanding of local issues would be key factors in representation.
He further pointed to ongoing and planned government interventions, including fisheries-related reforms, as part of efforts to address long-standing challenges affecting fishing communities in the islands.
He urged residents to remain focused amid political competition, warning against what he described as attempts by opposition actors to disrupt the campaign atmosphere.
Kasolo challenged local mobilisation teams to expand their voter outreach efforts, setting ambitious targets for each leader as part of a broader strategy to deliver a decisive win for the ruling party.
He also encouraged residents to actively participate in government development programmes, including the Parish Development Model and Emyooga initiatives, as part of wider socio-economic empowerment efforts.
Electoral Commission representative Kinobe, in turn, noted what he described as strong grassroots reception for the NRM campaign, saying the party’s candidate had been receiving backing from various local leaders, including elected officials and councillors.
The by-election race has drawn multiple contenders, setting the stage for a closely watched political contest in the island district as campaigns continue to intensify.
