Ugandan police have arrested two suspected members of a violent criminal gang believed to be behind a series of aggravated robberies and burglaries that have terrorized communities across Luwero District, following intelligence-led operations.
The Territorial Police in Luwero announced that the first suspect, Akim Ssekandi, also known as “Kimiyoo,” was arrested on June 12, 2026.
During interrogation, investigators say Ssekandi admitted participating in multiple aggravated robberies, burglaries, and thefts committed in different parts of the district.
According to police investigations, the gang targeted residents and businesses in Wobulenzi, Bombo, Kasana, Kiwoko, and Luwero Town Council.
Victims were reportedly attacked with iron bars and paving stones, sustaining injuries before being robbed of cash, personal belongings, and, in some cases, uniforms.
Information obtained from Ssekandi led detectives to launch another intelligence-led operation in the Kawanda-Matugga area on the morning of June 23, resulting in the arrest of a second suspect, Sserugga Shaban, alias “Dog City.” He remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspects frequently travelled from Matugga to Luwero District to ambush unsuspecting members of the public before fleeing the crime scenes.
Police say several related incidents remain under active investigation, while efforts are ongoing to track down other suspected members of the criminal network who are still at large.
Speaking on the operations, Savannah Region Police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima commended members of the public for supporting the investigations.
“These successful intelligence-led operations were made possible through information shared by members of the public. We encourage anyone with information about these or related offences to report to the nearest police station. All reports will be handled confidentially as we continue pursuing the remaining suspects,” Twiineamazima said.
The arrests are part of ongoing efforts by the Uganda Police Force to dismantle violent criminal gangs and enhance public safety across the Savannah Region.
