Police in Western Uganda are investigating the death of a 26-year-old man whose body was found lying in the middle of a road in Rubanda District, amid reported disagreements with relatives over land.
According to a police statement issued on Sunday, the incident occurred in Mukivunga Village, Bishakye Ward, Katojo Town Council. The deceased was identified as Elijah Ahimbisimbwe, a resident of the same village.
Police said the deceased left his home at about 11:30am on Saturday to attend a burial in Kifumba Village, also in Rubanda District.
His body was discovered by residents at about 07:00 on Sunday, lying on the road about 350 metres from his home.
Kigezi regional police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime said investigations were under way to establish the circumstances surrounding the death. Police said one suspect had been arrested to assist with the investigation.
The death comes against a reported background of disagreements between the deceased and some of his relatives over land matters, although police have not said whether the dispute was directly linked to his death.
Tumushime urged members of the public not to take the law into their own hands, calling instead for disputes to be handled through the country’s justice system.
Police said investigations would continue as officers seek to establish what happened, before his body was discovered.
