A man has died after allegedly being assaulted by members of the public over suspected theft in Kabale Municipality, prompting police to warn residents against taking the law into their own hands.
The deceased has been identified as Julius Musa, a casual worker and resident of Kigongi A Cell, Central Division, Kabale Municipality.
According to Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime, the incident was registered by Territorial Police in Kabale on Saturday, July 26, 2026, as a homicide believed to have resulted from assault.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Musa was found in possession of suspected stolen property before he was allegedly attacked by a mob. He sustained severe injuries during the assault and later succumbed to them.
Police officers from Kabale Central Police Station responded to the scene and conveyed the body to the mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations into the incident continue.
Police have strongly condemned acts of mob justice and urged members of the public to hand suspects over to law enforcement agencies instead of taking the law into their own hands.
SP Tumushime warned that anyone involved in unlawful assaults or killings will be held accountable under the law as investigations into the incident progress.
