LUGAZI – In May 2015, Benah Nambi sat in her quiet Lugazi home, staring at empty shop shelves and a drained bank account. Her husband had just lost a long, painful battle to illness. The fight had not just taken his life; it had swallowed every single shilling the family owned.

As a grieving widow, Nambi faced a terrifying reality. Her eldest son was midway through university, her second was due to join higher education in just three months, and younger dependents at home relied on her for daily survival. Without an income, her children were on the verge of dropping out of school, leaving the family facing total household collapse.

“The shop was empty because we spent everything trying to save his life,” Nambi recalls. “I looked at my children and asked myself where I would even begin. Their father was gone, meals were hard to guarantee, and their future was hanging by a thread.”

It was a crisis that could have crushed her family. Instead, it became the ultimate test of a mother’s resolve, backed by a financial partnership built over nearly two decades.

Long before she became a prominent trader, Nambi was an uneducated, dependent housewife whose world was bounded by cooking, cleaning, and digging in her husband’s garden. Her life shifted in 1998 when she attended a financial literacy training organised by FINCA Uganda.

Learning how micro-savings and small credit could build independence, Nambi took a leap of faith and borrowed just UGX 70,000. Using the UGX 70,000 loan, she began rearing broiler chickens in her backyard. She sold them at a profit, cleared her debt, and reinvested her earnings. Nambi methodically scaled up, moving through larger loan cycles and eventually founding Nyange Farm Supply in Lugazi town.

When tragedy struck in 2015, Nambi did not surrender. Seventeen years earlier, a single UGX 70,000 loan had transformed her from a dependent housewife into a self-reliant mother. Remembering how much that modest sum had done for her life, she walked back to her FINCA Uganda, not as a helpless widow, but as a proven partner with integrity behind her.

“They knew my history and knew I was a woman of my word,” Nambi says. “They approved a new loan to restock my empty shop.”

Armed with that lifeline, Nambi worked tirelessly, channeling her profits into tuition fees of UGX 1.4 million and hostel fees of UGX 750,000 every semester. She kept her children in university and continued providing school fees for orphaned nieces and nephews under her care.

Reflecting on Nambi’s 28-year journey since joining in 1998, Moses Ogwal, a Business Development Manager at FINCA Uganda notes : “Benah Nambi’s story is a powerful testament to what happens when you invest in a woman’s grit. When she lost her husband in 2015, her consistent repayment record enabled FINCA Uganda to assess and support her request for additional financing. For 28 years, she has proved that micro-finance is about giving a mother the tools to rewrite her family’s destiny.”

Today, Nambi’s enterprise generates an average net profit of UGX 12 million, and she has mentored over 30 local women to step out of economic dependence.

“Fear holds back so many people from approaching financial institutions,” Nambi reflects with a gentle smile. “Many people fear taking loans, but you should never fear starting small. I began this journey with just 70,000 shillings, and through discipline and finding a financial partner that walks with you, I scaled that small beginning into an enterprise generating 12 million shillings in average net profit. Start small, understand the loan terms, borrow within your means and use the funds for a clear productive purpose.”
