By Kabakama Dorah Daphine a Young Climate and Environmental Advocate

Climate change is no longer a distant problem that only future generations will have to deal with. It is already affecting our communities through unpredictable rainfall, prolonged droughts, floods, soil degradation and declining agricultural productivity. As young people, we must pay greater attention to how we protect our environment, especially through the way we farm.

Agriculture is one of the most important activities in our communities. It provides food, employment and income for millions of families. However, some farming practices are putting increasing pressure on the environment.

Cutting down trees to create farmland, cultivating wetlands, burning bushes and crop residues, and continuously growing crops without restoring soil nutrients can damage ecosystems and contribute to climate change.

Farmers should be encouraged to adopt practices that protect both their livelihoods and the environment. Agroforestry, for example, can make a major difference.

Planting trees alongside crops provides shade, protects soil from erosion, improves soil health and helps absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Farmers can also benefit from growing a variety of crops instead of depending on a single crop throughout the year.

Soil conservation should also become a priority. Practices such as mulching, composting, crop rotation and planting cover crops can help maintain soil fertility and reduce erosion.

Farmers should be supported with knowledge and affordable technologies that enable them to increase production without destroying the land on which their livelihoods depend.

Another concern is the practice of clearing land by burning vegetation. Although burning may appear to be a quick way of preparing fields, it releases carbon into the atmosphere and destroys organisms that are important for healthy soils.

Communities should be encouraged to find safer alternatives for managing agricultural waste, including composting and using crop residues to improve soil fertility.
Governments, agricultural organisations and local leaders have an important role to play. Farmers need access to extension services, climate information, improved seeds, water-saving technologies and affordable financing.

Climate-smart farming should not remain a slogan; it should become a practical reality for farmers in both rural and urban areas.

Young people also have a role in protecting the climate. We can participate in tree planting, educate our communities about sustainable agriculture and support innovations that reduce environmental damage. Schools and communities should teach young people that protecting nature is not separate from securing our future—it is part of it.

We must remember that the land we are farming today will be needed by future generations. If we exhaust the soil, destroy forests and pollute our water sources, we will leave behind a difficult future. But if we farm responsibly, protect trees and use natural resources wisely, we can produce food while preserving the environment.

Protecting the climate begins with the choices we make every day. The way we farm matters, and sustainable farming is one of the strongest ways we can protect our land, our food systems and our future.
