King Oyo to be buried on 31st coronation anniversary as Uganda mourns Tooro monarchs
The late Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, is to be buried on September 12, exactly 31 years after he ascended the throne, in a striking coincidence that will transform a traditional day of royal celebration into one of national mourning.
The burial date was announced by Charles Kamurasi, head of the royal clan, during a meeting with Tooro clan leaders at the royal palace in Karisika, Fort Portal.
The king’s body was flown in the country today Friday morning as preparations begin for his final rites.
Kamurasi said the royal family had considered arrangements that would have allowed members of the public to view the body at another location, but ultimately decided that it would remain at the royal palace.
A king crowned as a child
King Oyo’s accession to the Tooro throne was extraordinary by any measure.
He became Omukama on September 12, 1995, at the age of just three, following the death of his father, Patrick Olimi Kaboyo III.
His coronation placed a child at the centre of one of Uganda’s oldest traditional institutions at a time when the country’s kingdoms were re-establishing their cultural roles after years of political upheaval.
Over the following three decades, Oyo grew from a child monarch into the internationally recognised head of the Tooro Kingdom.
His reign combined the preservation of Tooro’s cultural identity with efforts aimed at social and economic development. The kingdom’s traditional institution remained an important symbol of identity for communities in western Uganda, while the king increasingly represented Tooro on national and international stages.
The circumstances of his accession also made his coronation a landmark event beyond the kingdom itself.

A three-year-old monarch inevitably required adults around the royal institution to shoulder much of the responsibility of guiding the young king and managing the affairs of the kingdom as he grew.
From coronation to final journey
September 12 has for decades carried a special significance for the Tooro royal institution because it marks the anniversary of Oyo’s accession.
This year, however, the date will have a very different meaning.
Instead of ceremonies celebrating another year of the king’s reign, Tooro will gather to accompany its monarch to his final resting place.
The coincidence is likely to give the funeral added symbolic weight, bringing together two defining moments of Oyo’s life as king: the day he inherited the throne as a child and the day the kingdom will bid him farewell more than three decades later.
For the people of Tooro, his reign represented a generation-long chapter in the history of the kingdom. For Uganda, his death marks the passing of one of the country’s most prominent traditional leaders.
As the kingdom prepares for the September 12 burial, attention is turning from the extraordinary story of a three-year-old who became king to the legacy he leaves behind after more than 30 years on the Tooro throne.
