KISORO, Uganda — The quiet of a bar in Kisoro Municipality was broken on Saturday morning when a boda boda rider was found dead on a mat where he had apparently spent the night after drinking alcohol.
The deceased has been identified as Jonas Habiyaremye, a boda boda rider and resident of Chanika Town Council in Kisoro District.
“Bar owners should install security lights and CCTV cameras and avoid operating late into the night,” said Nelson Tumushime, the Kigezi regional police spokesperson, as police investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
Police said Habiyaremye had gone to a bar in Kamonyi Cell, Kamonyi Ward, in the Northern Division of Kisoro Municipality, on September 4, where he drank alcohol.
After reportedly consuming a large amount of alcohol, he was allowed to sleep on a mat inside the bar, where the suspects also sleep, according to police. He was found dead the following morning.
Two people, identified by police as Spencer Erinatwe, 21, and Mable Irankunda, 23, have been arrested as investigations continue.
Police have not disclosed what led to their arrest or whether they have been formally charged.
Authorities are treating the case as a suspected murder, while the exact circumstances and cause of Habiyaremye’s death remain under investigation.
Tumushime also cautioned members of the public against excessive alcohol consumption, urging people to exercise greater caution when drinking.
Police are continuing with investigations to establish what happened between the time Habiyaremye arrived at the bar and when he was found dead.
