For many years, corporate sustainability was largely associated with tree planting campaigns, community donations and environmental conservation initiatives. While these efforts remain valuable, the conversation has evolved significantly. Today, sustainability is no longer defined by isolated projects but by the everyday decisions businesses make—from how they use resources and manage waste to how they treat employees, engage suppliers, support communities and govern their operations.

This shift is at the heart of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG). Increasingly, successful companies are recognizing that ESG is not the responsibility of one department or a compliance team. Rather, it is a shared responsibility that must be embedded across every level of an organisation. Sustainability delivers the greatest value when every employee understands that their decisions contribute to the company’s long-term success.

At Uganda Baati, this thinking inspired the establishment of ESG CHAMPS, a cross-functional team bringing together employees from different departments to champion sustainability within the business. The initiative gives staff a platform to identify opportunities, exchange ideas and influence how the company approaches environmental stewardship, social responsibility and good governance in their day-to-day work.

There is tremendous value in drawing perspectives from across an organisation. Employees on the factory floor experience operational challenges differently from colleagues in finance. Procurement teams understand the sustainability implications of sourcing decisions, while sales teams receive direct feedback from customers and dealers. Human resource professionals are best placed to strengthen employee wellbeing, and community engagement teams understand the company’s relationship with the wider society. Together, these diverse perspectives help create more practical and impactful sustainability solutions.

Speaking during the launch of ESG CHAMPS, Dr. Barirega Akankwasah, Executive Director of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), challenged businesses to move beyond regulatory compliance. His message was timely. Compliance provides the minimum standard expected of any responsible organisation, but genuine sustainability begins when businesses voluntarily ask how they can do better for the environment, their employees and the communities they serve.

For manufacturers, these questions are especially important. Industrial operations consume raw materials and energy, generate waste, employ thousands of people and depend on extensive supplier and distribution networks. Every operational decision therefore has environmental and social consequences. At the same time, Uganda needs industries that drive economic growth, create jobs, generate tax revenue and support local enterprise. Sustainable development is achieved not by choosing between economic growth and environmental responsibility, but by pursuing both simultaneously.

This requires organisations to rethink how they view everyday business decisions. Conserving raw materials is not simply about reducing production costs. Minimising waste is not solely an environmental obligation. Investing in employee wellbeing is not just a human resources function. Each of these contributes to building resilient, competitive businesses capable of delivering long-term value to shareholders, customers, employees and society.

Uganda Baati’s sustainability journey continues to evolve through responsible manufacturing, environmental stewardship, employee welfare, community engagement and strong corporate governance. ESG CHAMPS represents another step towards making sustainability a lived culture rather than a corporate slogan. By empowering employees to own the agenda, the company is creating a foundation for continuous improvement that extends beyond policy documents and annual reports.

No organisation has all the answers, and sustainability will continue to evolve alongside emerging environmental, social and economic challenges. What matters is cultivating a culture where people consistently evaluate decisions through a broader lens and remain committed to improving wherever possible. Before companies communicate sustainability achievements externally, they must first build sustainable habits internally. Credibility is earned when ESG is reflected in everyday actions rather than glossy publications.

Ultimately, the strongest measure of ESG will not be found in reports or awards but in the practices that become routine within organisations. It will be seen in resources used more efficiently, waste reduced or recycled, employees whose wellbeing is prioritized, suppliers engaged responsibly and communities treated as valued partners. When these behaviours become part of an organisation’s DNA, sustainability ceases to be a separate initiative and instead becomes the way business is done.
