Kenzo says he is too big for Uganda’s big three debate

KAMPALA, Uganda (UGNEWSLINE) – Ugandan music star Eddy Kenzo has dismissed comparisons with Bebe Cool, Jose Chameleone and Bobi Wine, arguing that placing him in the same conversation as the country’s long-established musical heavyweights fails to recognise the path he has taken and the achievements he believes set him apart.

For years, the debate over who deserves a place among Uganda’s musical elite has fuelled arguments among fans, musicians and entertainment commentators. But Kenzo appears ready to leave the contest behind, insisting that his ambitions extend beyond the familiar rankings that have dominated discussions about the country’s music industry.

According to the Big Talent Entertainment boss who also heads the Uganda Musicians Federation (UMF) comparing him to the trio is disrespectful, maintaining that his career had followed a different trajectory.

“I am beyond the Big Three talk and discussion. I am not on that level. Whoever puts me in there is just trying to put me down. I have done unique things; I have gone beyond,” Kenzo said.

The remarks amount to a rejection of a debate that has long placed Bebe Cool, Chameleone and Bobi Wine at the centre of conversations about Uganda’s most influential musicians. Kenzo’s argument is that his achievements should not be measured against a group whose reputations were built during a different phase of the country’s entertainment industry.

Yet his comments are likely to raise eyebrows among music fans, some of whom may interpret his position as a declaration that he has outgrown the very league in which many Ugandans have traditionally discussed the country’s biggest stars.

Bebe Cool, Chameleone and Bobi Wine became household names through years of hit songs, major concerts and fierce competition for musical supremacy. Their careers helped shape Uganda’s modern music scene, with each developing a distinctive public identity and a loyal following.

Kenzo, whose rise gathered international momentum with the success of Sitya Loss, has pursued a different route, building recognition beyond Uganda and positioning himself as an ambassador for Ugandan music on the international stage.

His career has included international performances and recognition that have helped widen his audience, giving him a platform to argue that his achievements should be considered independently of the established hierarchy.

But the question of who belongs among Uganda’s greatest musicians remains difficult to settle. Some fans place greater value on longevity and cultural influence, while others point to international recognition, commercial success and the ability to reach audiences beyond national borders.

Kenzo has previously challenged his exclusion from the Big Three conversation. In earlier remarks reported in 2023, he described himself as a “giant”, suggesting that the conventional grouping did not adequately reflect his stature.

His latest comments suggest that he would rather abandon the competition than continue arguing over a place in it.

For an industry where comparisons between stars can generate as much debate as the music itself, Kenzo’s message is clear: he wants his legacy judged on his own achievements, not on whether he measures up to Bebe Cool, Chameleone or Bobi Wine.
