An 18-year-old man drowned in a dam in Mubende District after reportedly leaving home to look for casual work.
Ronald Kansiime, a resident of Kyota Village in Naluwondwa Parish, Madudu Sub-county, died on October 1 after he went to a neighbour to ask for work of spraying crops.
According to police, Kansiime left home and headed to a neighbour identified as Dickson. Later that evening, children who had gone to fetch water from a dam belonging to Bright Niwagaba Rwambuka noticed clothes and sandals lying on the shore.
The children alerted Niwagaba, who went to the dam and found the clothes but could not see Kansiime anywhere. Suspecting that something was wrong, he reported the matter to Madudu Sub-county Police Station.
Police called for reinforcement from the Mubende District Police Command, prompting a team from the Fire Prevention and Rescue Services Department, together with homicide detectives and a doctor, to travel to the scene under the command of the Mubende District Police Commander.
Fire and rescue personnel entered the dam and recovered Kansiime’s body from deep water, where it had become trapped in silt.
The body was examined by a doctor at the scene, while police recorded statements from witnesses as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the drowning continued.
The body was later handed over to Kansiime’s relatives for burial.
Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi cautioned members of the public against bathing or swimming in unfamiliar dams, warning that such water bodies can pose serious risks.
