A 42-year-old woman has been hacked to death in Kiboga district in an incident police are treating as a suspected domestic violence killing.
Annet Namusoke was found dead at about 05:00 on Friday in Kakunyu B Cell, Kakunyu Ward, in Bukomero Town Council. Police said she had been living with a man identified only as Mustafa for about two years.
Neighbours told police that the couple had previously been involved in domestic disputes. A report was subsequently made at Bukomero Police Station by Matovu Sayiga Ali, a resident of the area.
Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Region police spokesman, said a homicide team led by the Kiboga district deputy criminal investigations officer visited the scene after the report was made.
Investigators documented the scene and found Namusoke’s body lying in a pool of blood.
Police said an axe believed to have been used in the killing was recovered at the scene, with what appeared to be blood stains on it. Witnesses have also given statements as investigators work to establish what happened before the woman’s death.
A police dog was deployed to help trace the suspect, but investigators said the effort was hampered after the scene was disturbed by people who had gathered there.
Namusoke’s body was taken to Kiboga Hospital for a post-mortem examination, while efforts to trace and arrest Mustafa are continuing.
Kigozi urged members of the public to avoid disturbing crime scenes, saying contamination can make it harder for investigators to establish what happened.
The incident has also renewed concerns over domestic violence, with police urging couples experiencing conflict to seek appropriate ways of resolving disputes before they escalate into violence.
