KAMPALA , Uganda (UGNEWSLINE) — Students have been urged not to allow their secondary school subject combinations to limit their career choices, but instead explore the wide range of professions that their education can prepare them for.

The call was made during a Careers Day organised by Viva College in partnership with the Fidelis Leadership Institute (FLI), bringing together more than 50 professionals from over 20 organisations to interact with students and share experiences from different careers.

The event brought together professionals from banking, engineering, medicine, law, media, insurance, architecture, advertising, construction, agriculture and vocational sectors.

The Careers Day is part of FLI’s ASPIRE Programme, which focuses on preparing young people for the world of work while developing them into future leaders.

FLI Executive Director Pheona Wall said students need to understand that taking particular subjects does not necessarily mean they must pursue only the careers traditionally associated with those subjects.

“If I study Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, it doesn’t mean I can only become a doctor. I could also become a chemist, a forensic psychologist, or a criminal forensics expert,” Wall said.

The Careers Day was organised around four clusters;  Biological, Physical, Humanities and Vocational,  giving students an opportunity to interact directly with professionals about their career journeys, workplace experiences, academic qualifications and skills required to succeed.

The event also sought to make different careers more practical and relatable to students. Kiira Motors Corporation showcased its Kayoola electric bus, while professionals from organisations including Guaranty Trust Bank, Metropolitan Republic, Uganda Editors Guild, Uganda Society of Architects, Pan Dental Surgery, Liberty Insurance Uganda and Kakira Sugar Works shared insights from their respective fields.

Wall said early exposure to professionals can help young people make informed decisions about their future.

“We believe leadership development and career readiness should begin early, by giving young people the right exposure, guidance and opportunities to learn from those already working in different fields,” she said.

Viva College said it is seeking to bridge the gap between education and the workplace by creating opportunities for students to gain practical experience through internships, mentorship and interaction with organisations.

Students who participated in the Careers Day said engaging directly with professionals gave them a better understanding of different careers and exposed them to opportunities beyond the professions they had initially considered.

Wall said the response from the students was encouraging.

“The turnout is impressive, and the questions are insightful. We believe these young individuals will make better career choices in the future,” she said.
