KAMPALA, Uganda (UGNEWSLINE) – MTN Uganda, through the MTN Foundation, has launched the MTN Teachers’ Resource Centre to strengthen digital skills among educators and improve learning, extending its investment in education beyond computer access and connectivity.

The centre, developed with Burn Radio Ltd under the Bridging the Digital Divide Programme, provides online and offline resources to help teachers improve lesson preparation, explore artificial intelligence tools and support learning at home.

The launch coincided with the graduation of 102 teachers who completed the International Certification of Digital Literacy (ICDL).

Bryan Mbasa, Senior Manager, MTN Foundation at MTN Uganda, said the initiative aligned with the company’s Ambition 2030 strategy, which seeks to lead digital solutions for Africa’s progress through connectivity, fintech and digital infrastructure, while creating shared value.

“Connectivity is an important starting point, but its real value lies in what people can do with it. By supporting teachers with digital skills and accessible learning resources, we want to strengthen teaching and expand opportunities for learners,” Kagina said.

The centre will also help parents understand Uganda’s curriculum and support children’s learning at home, including in communities with limited internet access.

Judith Akurut, the Commisioner Inspection and Compliance, Education Standards and Quality Assurance in the Ministry of Education and Sports, said partnerships with the private sector could complement Government efforts to integrate technology into education.

“Digital learning is most effective when teachers have the skills and resources to use technology in ways that improve classroom delivery and learner outcomes. Initiatives such as the MTN Teachers’ Resource Centre will help equip teachers with practical tools to support our new curriculum implementation and respond to the changing needs of learners,” she said. The initiative builds on the MTN Foundation’s Digital Access Programme, which supports computer access and ICT facilities in schools and other learning institutions. Since 2012, the Foundation has supported over 100 ICT and education interventions, including through partnerships with Kampala Capital City Authority.

MTN has also supported underserved schools to introduce learners to robotics, coding and artificial intelligence. In 2025, eight schools supported through its partnership with Burn Radio participated in the World Robot Olympiad Uganda National Championship for the first time.

Joseph Tibakanya, the senior curriculum specialist at the National Curriculum Development Centre said digital training could help teachers improve classroom delivery, particularly if opportunities reached underserved schools.

MTN Uganda also called on young people to enrol in the MTN Skilling Academy to develop skills that could improve their readiness for employment and participation in the digital economy.

The initiatives align with Uganda’s Fourth National Development Plan (NDP IV), which prioritises productivity, employment and socio-economic transformation, as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 on quality education, Goal 8 on decent work and economic growth, and Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure.

MTN Uganda said its education investments aimed to help teachers, parents and learners turn access to technology into practical skills and better learning outcomes.
