WAKISO District (UGNEWSLINE) – Police have recovered 40 motor vehicle batteries in an investigation into the theft of batteries from a construction company in Wakiso District, with one suspect arrested as detectives pursue other people believed to have been involved.

The batteries were recovered from premises at Nakawa Market following investigations into the theft of 20 batteries from Nyanama Mena Granite Limited in Nyanama Zone, Makindye-Sabagabo Municipality.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesman, Luke , the incident was reported on October 7 by Ghebrengusi Ezra Bairu, an Eritrean national, who told police that 10 company concrete mixer vehicles had been vandalised and 20 N150 batteries stolen.

The theft is believed to have occurred at about 4am, when unidentified suspects allegedly gained access to the company premises using ladders before removing the batteries.

Investigations led police to impound a vehicle, registration number UAL 499E, on October 18 and arrest a suspect identified as Mubiru Farouk.

Police said the suspect reportedly disclosed during questioning that the batteries had been hidden at his premises in Nakawa Market, prompting officers from Katwe Police to conduct a search the following day.

The search resulted in the recovery of 40 motor vehicle batteries, including the 20 N150 batteries reported stolen from the company. Police have not yet established the circumstances surrounding the other 20 batteries recovered.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said the suspect remained in custody as investigations continued, with efforts underway to arrest other suspects still at large.

Police have urged companies and members of the public to strengthen security at their premises and promptly report suspicious activities to help prevent theft and protect property.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against the arrested suspect have yet to be determined through court proceedings.
