KAMPALA, Uganda (UGNEWSLINE) – As November gets underway, supermarkets and retailers across Uganda are finding different ways to participate in the Black November shopping season. From retailers focusing on the traditional Black Friday period to supermarkets such as Carrefour Uganda, which has extended its promotions throughout the month, businesses are competing for the attention of consumers increasingly looking for ways to make their money go further.
A look across the retail market shows that Black November is no longer confined to a single shopping day. Some retailers are concentrating their offers around specific dates, while others are running week-long promotions or extending discounts throughout November. The result is a longer shopping season, giving consumers different opportunities to find deals and take advantage of reduced prices.
The timing is particularly significant for Ugandan households. With the cost of everyday necessities putting pressure on household budgets, shopping has become an increasingly deliberate exercise, with consumers paying closer attention to prices, comparing offers and looking for opportunities to save.
The latest figures from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics reinforce this reality. Annual inflation rose to 5.8% in October 2026, up from 4.6% in September, while annual food inflation reached 10.7%. For many households, this means having to think more carefully about how much they spend on groceries and other essentials.
This makes the current promotional season particularly relevant. Beyond the excitement of Black Friday advertising, shoppers are looking for discounts that translate into actual savings on products they use regularly.
Retailers are responding with different promotional strategies. Some are focusing on electronics, fashion and home appliances, while supermarkets are using discounts on groceries, beverages and household products to attract regular shoppers.
Carrefour Uganda, for instance, is running its month-long YoolaVember campaign from November 1 to 30, offering discounts of up to 50% on food, drinks, electronics, bedding, cleaning essentials and other products. The campaign also features weekly Trolley Dash challenges, where participants have 50 seconds to shop for at least five items within a UGX50,000 budget and win whatever they successfully select within the stipulated rules. The month-long approach builds on similar Black November promotions by the retailer in previous years.
Ultimately, the growing popularity of Black November promotions presents consumers with more opportunities to shop around and make informed purchasing decisions. However, not every advertised discount necessarily represents the best deal, making it important for shoppers to compare prices, check product offers and prioritise purchases that meet their needs.
With the festive season approaching, retailers will be looking to sustain this momentum, while shoppers will be watching closely for deals that offer genuine value. Whether the promotions last a day, a week or the entire month, the real winners of Black November should be consumers who get more value for their money.
