Uganda joined the global community today May 1, 2025 in commemorating International Labour Day, a day set aside worldwide to honor the contributions of workers and advocate for their rights and welfare.
This year’s national celebrations were held at Nakaale Grounds in the Nakapiripirit District, deep in the heart of the Karamoja Sub-region. The vibrant event was graced by President Yoweri Museveni as the Chief Guest and brought together a diverse audience that included diplomats, government officials, security forces, private sector players, and local residents.
Under the national theme: “Consolidating the Gains of the Parish Development Model for Increased Productivity and Inclusive Job Creation,” Uganda emphasized grassroots economic empowerment and job creation as key to sustainable national development.
Also known as May Day, International Labour Day is observed every May 1st in over 80 countries. It traces its origins to the 1886 labour movement in Chicago, where workers fought for an eight-hour workday. Today, it remains a powerful reminder of the enduring struggle for workers’ rights, fair wages, and dignified employment across the globe.
