KAMPALA– The director general of health services at the ministry of health Dr. Charles Olara has commended the world Diabetes Foundation [WDF] for recognizing and awarding journalists within the East African community member states for championing the fight against the NCD burden.
Dr. Olara made the remarks during the WDF Media Awards ceremony at Munyonyo convention Centre which also coincided with the official opening ceremony for the 7th East African Diabetes Study Group [EADSG] scientific congress under the theme ‘Diabetes Care in Resource-Limited Settings. A Comprehensive Approach’.
‘On behalf of the government of Uganda, we wish to welcome all the delegates coming for this high level congress as well as congratulation to the journalists whom I have just awarded for exellent work,’ Dr Olaro said.
Dr Olara ccommended Ugnewsline.com’ Reporter Mabonga for championing the fight of the NCDs among rural communities by highlighting the plight of the patients which development generated public debate leading to policy review calling others to emulate him.

Mabonga on behalf of Uganda the host country of the awards thanked the World Diabetes Foundation for the funding support as well as both the Uganda NCD Alliance and EANCD Alliance
He commended the efforts by the respective ministries of health of the member states as well as the EACNCD Alliance for coming out strongly with strategies capable of fighting to reduce the burden among their citizens.
‘Given the expensive costs of treating diabetes patients, he called on the member states to advocate for a joint pool procurement system were they can procure drugs as a block such that the patients can afford
Both the secretary general of the EADSG Prof.Kaushik Laxnidas Ramaiya from Tanzania and the congress chair Prof.Silver Behendeka [Uganda] said the congress shall discuss pertinent issues affecting the population and come out with evidence based solutions to reduce the burden.
The East African Diabetes Study Group (EADSG) is an organization committed to reducing the burden of diabetes in East Africa and beyond, by providing health care professionals with scientific information and educational initiatives designed to translate research into effective clinical practice.
