Aga Khan University to open it’s Kampala Campus in May

At least 700 students are expected to enroll, in the first semester in addition to another over 300 that will be transferred from the existing Aga Khan school of nursing and midwifery which currently located along Ghadafi road, in Kampala

The Aga Khan University is set to open it’s Kampala Campus in May this year.

During a media tour at the Nakawa based  site, it was revealed that construction of the academic complex and students hostels are complete and only awaits furnishings before the university opens it’s doors to the students in June.

Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin, the Aga Khan University chancellor revealed that the multi-million dolar education and healthcare facility is currently at 40 percent completion and is aimed at providing quality tertiary education as well specialized medical services.

“Whatever we have at our old campus will be transferred here by May, by June, this building will be buzzing with students and then by September we’ll start our new nursing programs, faculty of teachers among other programs will be available come September”, Dr. Sulaiman.

The university will also offer a wide range of health related courses including human medicine, nursing and midwifery, biotechnology, education, media and communication, etc and these will be offered at diploma, bachelor at masters levels.

” There are a number of course that we will be doing here but we’ll start with those that have been running at the school of nursing and midwifery for the last 25 years since 2000 when the university was introduced in Uganda”, said Dr. Joseph Mwizerwa, the associate Vice Provost, Aga Khan university, Uganda.

Mwizera further revealed that the university will also continue with it’s cooperate social responsibility where scholarship will be provided to the less advantaged but academic excelling learners.

” The Aga Khan foundation has in the past decades offered scholarships to hundreds of learners at our universities spread across the continent, I’m sure many Ugandans have benefited from these scholars, we won’t stop this initiative; we will continue offering these scholarships and these come with various terms, some are full scholarship others are partial”, said Mwizera.

Upon opening facility will be the 20th medical training institution in the country will complement governments effort in Skilling elite professions and providing specialized medical care.

Meanwhile, in June the construction of the university hospital will commence and this is expected to be complete by 2030 and will offer a wide range of specialized medical care and training to health experts.

Launched in 2015 by president Museveni the project situated at the former Nakawa estates is estimated to cost 180 million Dollars upon completion.
