The family of the late Omukama of Tooro, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, has rejected the announcement of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as his successor.
The family says the late King left behind a 2022 will which clearly sets out the line of succession to the Tooro throne.
According to the will, the late King’s son is designated as the first heir and successor to the throne.
Princess Ruth Komuntale, a sister of the late King Oyo, says the royal family was caught by surprise by the announcement made by members of the 21-member succession committee.
Addressing journalists at Karuzika Royal Palace on Wednesday night, Princess Komuntale said her late brother had left clear instructions regarding who should succeed him.
She said the family therefore questions the decision to name Prince Edward Kijanangoma as the next Omukama, arguing that the succession process should follow the wishes contained in the late King’s will.
The development has created uncertainty over the succession of the Tooro Kingdom following the death of King Oyo on August 27, 2026, at the age of 34 while receiving cancer treatment in the United States.
