BEIJING — Xiaomi has launched its REDMI 17 series, a new range of budget smartphones built around a bigger battery and an AI-powered camera.
The Chinese firm said the two new models, the REDMI 17 and the REDMI 17 5G, were designed for all-day reliability and everyday entertainment.
Both phones carry a 7,500mAh battery. The REDMI 17 starts at $179, while the REDMI 17 5G starts at $249.
Xiaomi said the larger battery would help users stay connected for longer between charges, whether streaming, navigating, making video calls or creating content.
According to the company, the REDMI 17 can deliver up to 28 hours of video playback, 91 hours of music, 46 hours of calls or 12 hours of video recording.
The REDMI 17 5G offers up to 28 hours of 1080p video playback, 109 hours of music through Bluetooth earphones, 53 hours of calls or 10 hours of 1080p recording.
Both phones support 45W fast charging through a USB Type-C port. They also offer 22.5W wired reverse charging, allowing users to charge other compatible devices from their phone.
On the back is a 50MP AI dual camera, with a five-element f/1.8 main lens and an auxiliary lens, which Xiaomi said captures clear, natural images in everyday settings.
The front camera is 8MP with an f/2.05 lens. A dual-view feature lets users record from the front and rear cameras at the same time.
The phones have a 6.9-inch display with a refresh rate that switches automatically between 60Hz, 90Hz and 120Hz. Xiaomi said this keeps scrolling smooth while saving power.
The screen reaches 675 nits of typical brightness and up to 825 nits in high-brightness mode. It has a touch sampling rate of up to 240Hz, a 1400:1 contrast ratio, 16.7 million colours and 83% NTSC colour coverage.
It also holds three TÜV Rheinland certifications, for low blue light, flicker-free viewing and circadian-friendly performance, and uses DC dimming to make long viewing sessions more comfortable.
The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i for better scratch and drop resistance. Both phones are rated IP64 for dust and splash protection, and include Wet Touch Technology to keep the screen responsive with wet fingers.
The REDMI 17 is powered by MediaTek’s Helio G91-Ultra, a 12nm octa-core chip with Cortex-A75 and Cortex-A55 cores, speeds of up to 2.0GHz and a Mali-G52 MC2 graphics processor.
The REDMI 17 5G uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 5, a 4nm octa-core chip with Cortex-A78 and Cortex-A55 cores, speeds of up to 2.4GHz, an Adreno graphics processor and 5G support.
Both models support up to 12GB of RAM with Memory Extension, helping apps open faster and multitasking run smoothly. Storage can be expanded by up to 2TB with a microSD card.
They run Xiaomi HyperOS 3, which the company said brings smoother animations and quicker responses.
Dual stereo speakers offer up to a 300% volume boost for videos, music and calls. The phones keep the 3.5mm headphone jack, support FM radio and work with AAC, SBC and LDAC audio codecs.
Connectivity includes dual-band Wi-Fi, a hybrid tray for two SIM cards and a microSD card, and NFC in selected markets. The REDMI 17 supports Bluetooth 5.4 and the REDMI 17 5G Bluetooth 5.1.
Both handsets measure 170.12mm by 78.42mm by 8.8mm and weigh 232g.
Xiaomi described the new design as nature-inspired, with a flat display, a matte frame, metal accents and rounded corners for a comfortable grip. A centre punch-hole camera and slimmer bezels give the front a cleaner look.
A new Dynamic RGB Light system glows for incoming calls, notifications, charging, gaming and camera use.
The REDMI 17 comes in Black, Deep Blue, Oak Green and Lotus Purple, in 4GB+128GB, 4GB+256GB, 6GB+128GB and 6GB+256GB versions.
The REDMI 17 5G comes in Black, Deep Blue and Vivid Orange, with the Vivid Orange model featuring a PU leather finish for a softer feel. It is offered in 4GB+128GB, 4GB+256GB and 6GB+256GB versions.
Xiaomi said colours and configurations may vary by market.
Founded in April 2010, Xiaomi listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in July 2018. It is a constituent of the Hang Seng Index, the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index, the Hang Seng TECH Index and the Hang Seng China 50 Index.
The firm had 754.1 million monthly active users on its smartphones and tablets globally in December 2025. More than 1.07 billion devices, excluding phones, laptops and tablets, were connected to its internet of things platform by the end of that year.
In October 2023, Xiaomi adopted a “Human × Car × Home” strategy linking personal devices, smart home products and cars. It said its electric vehicle business became profitable within six quarters of starting deliveries and had delivered more than 600,000 vehicles by February 2026.
Xiaomi products are sold in more than 100 countries and regions. In July 2026, the company was named on the Fortune Global 500 list for the eighth year in a row, ranking 232nd.
