KAMPALA, Uganda (UGNEWSLINE) –The government has commended Bwaise II Kawempe Parish Development Model (PDM) SACCO in Kawempe Division, Kampala, for its impressive growth and income-generating projects aimed at improving members’ livelihoods.
Ronald Segaluma, the Bwaise II Parish Chief, made the remarks during a field monitoring visit to the SACCO’s project workshop in Mukalazi Zone.
Segaluma attributed the SACCO’s progress to teamwork and members’ commitment to various income-generating activities, including winemaking, confectionery and food value addition.
He said the projects had strengthened members’ ability to generate income and improve their household welfare.
According to Segaluma, the SACCO’s membership has grown from 268 to more than 836, reflecting increased participation in its activities.
He said the growth is encouraging because members were increasingly gaining the capacity to meet essential household needs, including school fees and other family expenses.
The SACCO’s members add value to locally available agricultural produce by turning pineapples, tomatoes, oranges, grapes, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes and bananas into wine and other products.
They also produce hibiscus drinks and a variety of fruit juices, which are packaged and supplied to the market through established market networks.
The initiative helps members make better use of agricultural produce that might otherwise go to waste while creating opportunities to earn additional income.
Segaluma said the government would consider providing additional funding to the SACCO in recognition of the impressive performance demonstrated by its members.
He encouraged the SACCO to maintain its commitment to productive activities that improve household incomes and support the objectives of the Parish Development Model.
